Growing up Black
So, the other day I was talking with a few of my friends about growing up Black, and we discussed how we’ve all had non-traditional Black experiences. Let me elaborate. Often times, people will ask if we’re really Black, which is an off-putting question to receive.
I share this to say that we don’t all act the same, look the same or feel the same way about everything, but what I can tell you is that Black people are diverse, and all of our experiences are unique. This is why @issarae is a ray of sunshine because she debunked many people’s stereotypes about the Black experience with her Awkward Black Girl series and now Insecure.
Can any of you relate to this? I’ve heard from other friends that this happens in their cultures too. We stereotype people a lot! Sometimes without even thinking. How many times have people assumed you’re of a different race and that influenced their treatment of you? Did you correct them? Tell me in the comments.
